How to Maintain Your Hardwood Fooring

How to Maintain Your Hardwood Fooring

25 February 2018

Hardwood flooring can be a pricey purchase but the end result is well worth the price tag. When you are buying this flooring option it is imperative that you know how to look after and care for it to extend the lifetime of your investment. We have put together some of the most important maintenance tips for you to follow.

Woodpecker Flooring - York; White Washed Oak

Keep Clean

One of the most common reasons hardwood floors become damaged is down to scratches from dirt on the surface. The only solution here is to regularly clean with a sweeping brush and vacuum. This will also create a more inviting space for you to work and live in.

Keep Dry

Water is a real threat to you hardwood flooring as it can cause warping, which is something you really want to avoid. It’s very important to clean up spillages immediately. When mopping the floor make sure that it is only slightly damp to make sure you are not adding unnecessary moisture to the wood. It is a good idea to keep mopping to a minimum and use alternative cleaning methods, such as sweeping with a soft bristled brush.

Protect from furniture

All furniture around the house can become a threat to your hardwood flooring. For example moving dining room chairs on a daily basis can create scratches and marks. The quick and easy fix for this is to apply felt furniture tips to the bottoms of all of your furniture. These are easy to find in DIY shops and quick to apply and will result in the parts of your furniture that touch the wood floor to be cushioned. It’s a handy tip to remember that along with the furniture tips you should also get into the habit of lifting furniture rather than sliding.

Protect from Rugs

Area rugs are a great addition to a home, and adds some added comfort if you have hardwood floors. Just like furniture though, if a rug moves around too much on hardwood floors it can lead to scratches. It is always a good idea to use rug pads to keep them from moving. Not only is this good for your floors but it can stop accident from happening.

Protect from Shoes and Claws

Our four legged friends brighten up our homes so much, however dogs nails are another way that hardwood floors can become scratched. Keeping pet nails trimmed is an easy way to stop this from occurring. It’s not just our pets that are to blame for scratched on hardwood floors. Wearing inappropriate footwear on the flooring can damage it as well. We advise that the best way to protect the wood it to not wear high heels on the surface.

Avoid Sunlight

As for a lot of different items around the home excessive sunlight can wreak havoc on wood floors. The sunlight can cause fading and discoloration, so it’s important to make sure no areas of wood receives too much direct sunlight. The best way to initiate this is by purchasing blinds or curtains to minimise sun damage. A more expensive option is to have your windows covered in UV coating.

We used Tailored Flooring to replace the ugly, broken slate tiles in both our kitchen / diner and family bathroom. It was something we had been putting off for some time as we thought it would be quite an upheaval. In actual fact, it was one of the smoothest jobs we have had done on the house, thanks to Darren and his team. The knowledge and efficient service from the whole team was second to none and they were polite, punctual and a pleasure to have around whilst the work was completed. The result is two truly beautiful new floors which make us feel as if we have two brand new rooms. We are absolutely thrilled and would use Tailored Flooring again and again – we’ve already given a business card to a friend.

Your chaps did such a sensationally good job I thought I must send you these photos of them hard at work. A visitor here recently who seemed knowledgable on carpet laying said he had never seen better. He was particularly impressed with how you managed so professionally to replace the worn through stair and bathroom carpets with the relatively unworn parts of the main assignment. All, I probably told you almost 50 years old.

I used Tailored flooring to fit new flooring in my kitchen (Karndean), and carpet throughout the rest of the house. It's a project that took me just over a year, doing each room separately. Darren and team were so accommodating, great value for money and generally really nice guys. They allowed me to buy the carpet in one go,and store it with them until we were ready to have it fitted. They have their own team of fitters and were so flexible in arranging fitting, I'm not sure you'd get that with a national company. They were really good value for money, as I'd done my research and also got other quotes. All in all I'm really pleased, the carpet looks fabulous and I'd definitely use Tailored flooring again.

Tailored Flooring saved our bacon and did a better job than I could have imagined possible with our kitchen and bathroom flooring. We were due to have kitchen flooring fitted, so the kitchen was emptied, all appliances disconnected and completely unusable, and the fitter we had booked let us down the morning they were due to fit. I was in a complete panic as I had property valuations booked for the end of the week before which the kitchen and bathroom flooring had to be completed.

Within an hour of leaving a message with Tailored Flooring, Darren had called me back and said he would be with me within the hour to see what he could do. Exactly as promised, he attended, measured and talked me through what he could do for us. It turned out we'd selected completely inappropriate flooring (soft vinyl in a huge, heavily used kitchen), and Darren guided us through better options available to us. To cut a long story short, he went out of his way to jiggle us into the schedule, order materials and the next day his fitter, Grant, was working on our flooring.

The fitter, Grant, is a master. He was very tidy and careful (given the rest of our home is cream carpets), he worked quietly and very quickly. Each evening he tidied everything away. When it came to fitting the Karndean tiles, he talked me through the different options of laying them (brick style etc.) and also made his own recommendations from his experience. He measured the placement of the tiles to ensure there weren't any odd shaped tiles and when the job was complete it exceeded all our expectations.

We managed to get everything straightened out at home in readiness for the property valuations, and two estate agents who had previously valued our home commented on the positive updates to the flooring.

Also, they have recently moved to a beautiful show room on Alma Road which I walked past before they opened and had admired through the windows. If you want some inspiration, then definitely pop in for some very good quality, well merchandised and easy to browse carpets and flooring.

I am really looking forward to using Tailored Flooring again for our next home.
